If you are a day-care provider you will want to be certain that the policy you take out protects your charges and gives you the cover you need. Where can you turn for help and what level of cover do you really need?
FDCA comprehensive child insurance cover
Daycare providers take on a significant responsibility when they agree to care for other people’s children. Like most businesses in the services industry, insurance is required. The industry body, the Family Day Care Australia (FDCA), has, with the assistance of a broker, negotiated a good deal on insurance for its members. As well as a competitive rate, this FDCA policy offers the most comprehensive child insurance for day care providers.
FDCA is a not-for-profit organisation that uses its collective clout and reinvests any income earned to deliver services to members such as:
- Access to a freecall 1800 number
- Access to staff with specialist knowledge and experience about family day care
- Strong buying power to negotiate quality products and services
- Information for day care providers about legislation changes and new schemes
- Marketing strategies to promote family day care
- A strong national voice when dealing with Government
As the Family Day Care Australia is 100 percent Australian member owned, professional child care service providers can be confident that the insurance policy on offer to carers has been created to meet their specific needs.
Daycare Insurance: what’s covered
FDCA’s public liability insurance offers insurance protection for carers conducting family day care or in-home care service. This insurance protects carers in case of third party property damage, injury to children in care or injury to any member of the general public that arises from the provision of the family day care or in-home care service. This policy does not cover the carer or their family for property damage or injury. It provides cover for up to:
- $10 million public liability, any one occurrence
- $10 million products liability
- $10 million landlords liability
- $1 million errors and omissions (professional indemnity)
- $50,000 criminal defence
If a claim is brought against a day-care business in relation to an injury to a child in care, for example, without insurance the business owner could be personally liable to pay any damages or compensation that may be awarded to the child. Public liability indemnifies the business against such claims, subject always to the policy terms and conditions. Products liability covers civil liability for bodily injury, damage to property due to public and or product liability (conditions apply).
The errors and omissions (professional indemnity) covers civil liability for any claim arising from a breach of professional duty. Criminal defence insurance (individual) covers legal costs associated with the defence of a successful criminal prosecution brought in relation to your childcare business. Business Plus is an additional option – it extends the criminal defence insurance to cover adult family members.
The insurance offered by the FDCA is led by certain underwriters at Lloyd’s of London as listed: Illium Syndicate 4040.
