CTP insurance benefits and shortcomings
Your CTP Insurance will cover you for personal injury claims made against you by other road users such as drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and pillion passengers (secondary passengers on a motorcycle or moped). However, your Greenslip almost certainly won’t cover you for the following things:
- Personal injury to another party where a legal liability can be established.
- Personal injury sustained by you or the driver of your vehicle or damage to property or other vehicles.
- If an accident is not your fault. In this instance, you should claim on the other driver's green slip insurance
The Insurance Council of Australia may be able to offer advice about Greenslips and finding a suitable insurance broker. Premiums set by your insurance company consider various factors, including your accident record, age, vehicle and other policies you may have, but they average around AU$419 per year, per motor vehicle.
Newer factors of compulsory third party insurance
Greenslips included additional features in 2006 and 2007 benefitting children and injured parties in accidents with no fault attached respectively. The section relevant to children states that any child injured in road accidents will receive treatment and care, regardless of whose fault an accident is. Furthermore, as part of the scheme, when no party is at fault in an accident, injured parties can claim personal injury compensation. Such instances may include sudden illness, such as a driver suffering a heart attack or stroke, or mechanical or vehicle failure not caused by negligent driving.
Your CTP insurance will cover your passengers, other road users and injuries caused by use of a trailer, but it will not cover damage to property or other vehicles. Still, even though it is a compulsory form of insurance, most would agree that the Greenslip aids peace of mind for all road users.
