Being an adrenalin junkie can be one expensive addiction. If you love living life on the edge, or are just looking to try something exciting while travelling, it can be difficult to find insurance that covers extreme sports and adventure activities.
Adventure insurance for thrill seekers
For many people, a good holiday can be measured by books read, cocktails consumed or tan acquired. Other people, or "adventure travellers", measure a good holiday by how many out of the norm experiences they can gain. Unfortunately, insurance issues can arise from this desire to put one's life in danger. Insurance is available at a higher cost, but it also depends on what type of adventure you're planning and which country you're planning to do it in.
Because adventure travel has a high risk of injury and death attached to it and exposes the traveller to extreme weather conditions, it is imperative to be covered by insurance. Regular travel insurance will cover you for the normal things like cancelled bookings and so forth but will not provide for insurance requirements associated with extreme sports.
Is it a high risk activity?
Adventure travel insurance covers the thrill seeker for a wide variety of activities. Snowboarding, abseiling, kayaking, rock climbing, white water rafting, shark-cage diving, sky diving, camel riding, hang gliding and surfing tours (along with numerous others) are all insurable risks. Any person who undertakes these activities should consider adventure travel insurance.
Some activities have special conditions attached to coverage and you should check with your insurer to make sure that the policy is tailored to suit specific needs. If your activity is not named on the policy then the holder may not be covered. This means you will have to personally cover the cost in the case of injury or any other mishaps.
